Punishment
In Ancient Rome slaves didn't have any rights and were treated like an object someone owned. As slaves costed money the punishments inflicted on them weren’t long lasting. Getting beaten by a whip was the most common punishment. The slaves would have weights tied to their feet so they couldn’t move while they got whipped. Another punishment was to be branded in the forehead or to force the slave to carry a piece of wood on their necks everywhere they went. After this punishment had been put apron a slave they would always be called furcifer. Slaves also got punished by being put in a work-house and having to turn a mill to grind corn.
Forgery was not punishably by death, unless you were a slave. Although freemen having done such a crime were banished, which made them loose their property and privileges.
Romans could be punished in lots of different ways depending on what they have done, they could be fined, bonds, stripes, retaliation, infamy, banishment, slavery, or sentenced to death. A Roman couldn't be killed unless he or she had been found guilty of treason. A Roman had the right to be tried in Romeif and be accused of treason. If the roman had been punished with death, they could not be sentenced to be crucified.
The Romans had various methods for killing people who stepped out of line. During the time of Nero the punishment for treason was to be stripped naked, have your head held up by a fork and get whipped to death. But the most common punishments were:
Being thrown into a river was was only done if you killed your father. If you had done so you were blindfolded not deserving the light, then you were brought to the field of Mars on the outskirts of Rome, stripped and whipped with rods. You then got sewed into a sack, and thrown into a river. A while later a serpent or a ape, dog or cock was also put into the sack to add to the punishment.
